Funeral for Jewel R. "Mac" McWhorter, 86, of Decatur will be Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at 11 a.m., at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Steve Chandler of Beltline Church of Christ, Mike Nix, Minister of Beltline Church of Christ, Honorable Bill Dukes, Alabama State Representative, and Pastor Charles Baggett officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 4:30 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. McWhorter, who died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at Huntsville Hospital, was born Jan. 2, 1920, in Lawrence County, to Richard Clifton McWhorter and wife Ethel Sockwell McWhorter. He was a real estate developer, a Monsanto retiree and civic leader.

He was raised in the Austinville Community and worked with his father, Richard C. McWhorter, on the family produce farm (Longview Truck Farm), during the Great Depression. A 1938 graduate of Austinville High School, he attended Auburn University and graduated from Florence Teachers College. Mr. McWhorter served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, aboard the U.S.S. Pinto as a radar man, Third Class Petty Officer. He was a former employee of J.C. Penney on 2nd Avenue in downtown Decatur, and later retired from Monsanto after 27 years of service, where he was personnel manager. As a civic leader, he served as chairman for the Decatur City School Board of Education for 10 years, with the Decatur Chamber of Commerce Racking Horse Committee for 10 years, and served as Manager of the Southeastern Horse Center, and on the Industrial Development Association Board of Directors. He was a devoted husband, married to Ann McWhorter for 51 years, and was a loving and grateful Christian and member of Beltline Church of Christ. Two brothers, R.C. McWhorter and J. Kenneth McWhorter, and one sister, Ethel Sue McWhorter, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Rose "Ann" Ponder McWhorter; two sons, Mark McWhorter and wife La Donna, and Joel McWhorter and wife Laura, both of Decatur; one daughter, Lisa McWhorter Hart and husband Jerry, of Arab; two sisters, Telette McWhorter Napps and Twilight McWhorter Royer, both of Decatur; seven grandchildren, Alex McWhorter, Jason McWhorter and Jessica McWhorter, all of Decatur, Tyler Hart and Morgan Hart, both of Arab, and Michael McWhorter and Anna McWhorter, both of Decatur; and one great-grandchild, Cole McWhorter.

Pallbearers will be Roy Alexander, James Daws, Granville Graves, Dovell Haley, Gary Hill and Hollis Lynn.

Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Cagle, Ronald Terry, Gary Phillips, Bill Simpson, H.M. "Doc" Turner, Morris Reagin and Ronny Russell.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Decatur Heritage Christian Academy, P.O. Box 5659, Decatur AL 35601 0659, or Boys and Girls Club of Decatur, P.O. Box 1431, Decatur, AL 35602.
