Mrs Julia Carey Has Resided Here For Over 60 Years

Mrs. Julia Carey, 86, a pioneer resident of the Ashland community passed away early Saturday, Jan. 13, at her home here. In spite, of the fact that she has been in failing health she remained quite active for a woman her age. Mrs. Carey had a wide circle of friends all of whom will miss her presence among them.

Julia Abigail Vallier was born at Bellevue, Iowa on September 16, 1864. Early in her life she moved with her parents to Nebraska where she grew to womanhood. She was married to Timothy Carey at Republican City, Ne in the year 1880 and a short time later they settled on a farm near Ashland. This community was her home over 60 years, 48 of which were spent on the Carey farm north of town.

Mrs. Carey was the mother of six children of whom two, Earl and Inez preceded her in death. On February 23, 1944, Mr. and Mrs. Carey celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. It was this same year that Mr. Carey passed away.

When a young woman, Mrs. Carey became a member of the Midland Christian church which was erected near her home. Then in September 1902 she transferred to the Ashland Christian church where she was a faithful and devoted member for over 48 years. She was a Charter member of the North Ashland Womans club and a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship.

She is survived by four children, Mrs. Mae Cook of McCleary, Wash.; Mrs. Ethel Vandeman of Burlington, Wash.; Mrs. Ruth Harrier of Culver City, Calif. and Clifford D. Carey of Ashland. There are also two brothers, Alec Vallier of Ashland and Peter Vallier of Princeton, Ks.; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15 at the Marcy chapel. Rev. H. H. Utterback, pastor of the Ashland Christian church was in charge.

The music was furnished by Mrs. Gloria Grimm, whe sang "When They Hear The Golden Bells" and "No Night There." The organ accompaninent was played by Mrs. Howard Anderson.

The pallbearers were Gilbert Raasch, Otis Ballou, Richard Clark, John Karloff, Mike Hooker and Fred Stickney.

Burial was made in the Ashland cemetery.
