"Woman Shoots Self At Inn In Abingdon
Abingdon, Va. - Police Chief J.D. Christian reported Wednesday that Miss Grace Counts, 43, was found dead in a room at Martha Washington Inn at 4 p.m. Tuesday with a .22 revolver bullet shot through her left breast.
Christin said a suicide note was found addressed to her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth K. Counts. He said the woman lived in Abingdon with her mother and brother, E. Gorman Counts, and had returned without the knowledge of her family from Washington D.C., where she had been attending school. The officer said she checked in at the Inn at 8 p.m.
Her note revealed that she had failed in some school work in Washington and was despondent, Christian said. A maid at the Inn discovered her body. Her gun lay on an open Bible.
The family moved from Russell County about a year ago. Survivors are her mother; four brothers, W.L. Counts, Honaker, Va; Paris L. Counts, Portland, Ore., Kilby P. Counts, St. Albans, W. Va.; and Gorman Counts, Abingdon; four sisters, Mrs. Trigg M. Powers, Westminster, Md., Mrs. R.F. Sutherland, Kingsport; Mrs. R.L. Sutherland, Grundy, Va., and Mrs. E. Koehler, Melborne, Fla.
Funeral services will be held at Campbell Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. E. M. Collier in charge of service. Burial will be in Russell Memorial Cemetery."
