Mary Alice Lawrence was one of eleven children born to John Henry and Mary Aletta (Barth) Lawrence. Her siblings were: Wesley, Elmer, Alvin, Harvey, Samuel, Martin, Willard, Bessie (Mrs. Grover Hotelling), Margaret (Mrs. Elza Hotelling), and Susie (Mrs. Elton Swihart).

She married John Franklin Swartz on 24 November 1905 in Wyandot County, Ohio. He was the son of Daniel S. and Sarah Amelia (Calhoun) Swartz, Jr.

They became the parents of the following eight children: Mary Ellen, Cora Irene, Ida M., Thelma F., Beulah R., Paul E., Harold F. "Jack" and Ruthanna Swartz.
