They had lived in Nes Askershus, Norway and decided to migrate to the US for a new life. They left Bergen, Norway
on the Harald Haarfagre on the 29th of Jun 1876. They finally landed in Philidelphia, Pa on the 4th of July, 1876. It was Christine's birthday; (Thea's mother). Tarald told Christine that they were firing off the fireworks for her birthday.
They lived for a time in Alpena, Michigan where "Tilly" (as Thea was called} was born. Then Tarald moved west and worked in the lead mines in Montana where he damaged his lungs. They finally made it to Port Orchard where they run the poor farm for the state and had Norwegian girls come over to work giving them the opportunity to travel to the US.
One family member tells that Tilly and Matinae met through a business associate. He had lost his wife to TB and had three children to take care of. Tilly was nearly 30 when they got married in Port Orchard by a Lutheran Minister. They were married 19th of October 1905 in Kitsap Co. Carl Lund and J.L.Kiernan were their witness.
Tilly and A.M.Riste (Matinae or Al) moved to Loomis and lived in one of a pair of log cabins down below the Cutchie place, until the big home Matinae was building was done. Their eldest son, Joe was born in that old log house.
When their big house was finished at the base of Little Chopaka, they moved in and eventually had 5 boys and a girl.
