About 1819 John left with his mother and other siblings and relatives and migrated to southwest Ohio, arriving in Warren county in 1819-1820.
Shortly after arriving in Warren county, John married Margaret Roberts (who had also migrated from New Jersey with the Ware family) on 20 Sep 1821 in Lebanon, Warren, Ohio.
John and Margaret lived in the Warren county area until about 1830 when he moved his family from Warren county to Montgomery county and then on to Stony Creek township, Henry county, Indiana. Here they settled and lived for the next 17 years.
About 1847 his family and children and their families all moved to West Liberty, Union township in Howard county, Indiana where they bought land and settled down. John also bought 80 acres in neighboring Grant county on 20 Mar 1849 as well as land in Howard county. His two sons, William and Jesse also bought 160 acres each in Union township, Howard county. Here John lived for the next 15 years.
There is no indication that he participated as a soldier in the Civil War, but his son Jesse was drafted.
Sensing his time was near, he wrote out his will on 26 Jun 1865. He passed away a month later on 27 Jul 1865 at his home in West Liberty at the age of 65. He was buried a few days later in the Union Civil-Forks of the Creek Cemetery, in West Liberty, Union township, Howard county, Indiana.
