James Collie was born March 17, 1837, in Edinburg, Scotland. He was one of three children to James Collie and Elizabeth Bain Collie. He passed away at his home on September 16, 1915 in Jewell County, Kansas.

He was a small child when he and his family crossed the ocean and settled in St. Louis, Missouri while . Where both of his parents passed away.James and his brother were small when they passed away. James and his brother William were raised and cared for by their sister Jeanette Sutherland. In 1848 they journeyed across the plains to Salt Lake City, Utah, where they resided for a few years, before moving to Netawaka, Kansas.

On February 24, 1865 he enlisted as a private in the 10th Kansas Volunteer Infantry in New Eureka, Kansas. This regiment saw service at the battle of Nashville, Tenn., the seige of Mobile, Alabama.

In 1871, he came to Jewell County, Kansas, homesteading in Athens Township. On July 27, 1873, he married Susan M. Davis. To this union, eight children were born. His only sister Jeanette passed away July 2, 1910 and his only brother William passed away Oct. 15, 1914. Two sons and one daughter, Hugh James, Roy Otis and Alice Colson preceded him in death.
