William was the fifth son of John S. Moore and his wife, Nancy Edwards. He was a farmer, in 1868 he engaged in stock and grain business in Watseka (Iroquois County), Illinois. He married first to Eliza Jane Fleming; one of five children born to Peter Fleming, Jr. and his wife, Rebecca Blount. Their nuptials were said on Christmas Day in 1834 in Warren County, Indiana. They had five children; one son and four daughters. After Eliza's death in 1845, William married Arsenath Eleanor "Elle" Lambert; a daughter of Mordica Lambert and his wife, Sarah Liming. They were wed on October 23, 1845. They had ten children; five sons and five daughters.
