Joseph was the eleventh child of John S. Moore and his wife, Nancy Edwards. He married Ann Fry on March 22, 1847 in Christian County, Illinois. They had nine children; six sons and three daughters. Joseph was killed by a freight train in 1893 while crossing the tracks.
