Lois Abernathy, age 80, of Royal, died Saturday, July 25, 2009. She was born on May 6, 1929, at Mauldin, Arkansas, the daughter of Ray Carmack and Nannie Goodner Carmack. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; one brother, David Carmack; and one sister-in-law, Joyce Carmack. She was Baptist in faith and was a 1959 graduate of St. Joseph's School of Nursing. She had the distinction of being the first married student ever accepted to the nursing school. She was a retired registered nurse, who dedicated her career and life to caring for others. She is survived by her husband, Bill Abernathy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and June Abernathy, and Paul and Tammy Abernathy; two grandchildren, Stacy Dodd and husband, Josh, and Dillon Abernathy; one great-granddaughter, Carlie Dodd, all of Royal; one brother, Buddy Carmack of Hot Springs; one sister-in-law, Linda Carmack of Glenwood; and nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Oden, Arkansas, with Bro. Larry Catcher officiating, under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Hot Springs. Pallbearers will be Dillon Abernathy, Paul Abernathy, Dan Abernathy, Lynn Bradley, Jeff Carmack and Randy Dollar. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Ron Kaler, Dr. John Bond, Dr. Tamayo, the staff of St. Joseph's 4th Floor East, 3rd Floor East and the Intensive Care Unit, Walter "Buddy" Carmack and Josh Dodd. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph's School of Nursing Alumni, C/O Betty Haygood, 140 Cooper, Unit 1-A, Hot Springs, Arkansas 71913.
