Mrs Melvern M. Jewell


Mrs. Melverne M. Jewell died at 2 o'clock Monday morning at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Webb Chamberlain, at Milford. She had been in failing, health for about two years, but for the last four months had been seriously ill of heart trouble at the home of daughter, where she had been very tenderly cared for.

She was born at Westville September 16, 1866, a daughter of Thomas P. Gano and Clymena Saxton Gano. In 1866 she married Melverne M. Jewell, who survives. Others surviving are three sons, Ernest Jewell, of Westville, Harold Jewell of Schenectady; Kenneth Jewell, who resides on the home farm on the Westville road;.four daughters,
Mrs.Fred Ottaway of Westville, Mrs. Webb Chamberlain of Milford, Mrs. Charles Alexander of Franklin, Mrs. Kenneth Webb of Cooperstown; one brother, Seth T. Gano, of Belmont, Mass.; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild, Richard Jewell, son of Mr. and Mrs.Clark Jewell of Westville.

Mrs. Jewell had always been a resident of this vicinity. She was/educated at Hartwick Seminary and taught school before her marriage. She was a devoted worker in the Westville Methodist church and played the organ there for many years. In the last few years, she had been a member of the Milford Ladies Aid society. During most of her married life, she had lived on a farm on the Westville road, where she and Mr. Jewell celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1936. Mrs. Jewell was a woman of pleasing personality, and was devoted to her home and family. Her loss will be keenly felt in these and other circles.

The funeral will be held Wednesday the afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Webb Chamberlain. The Rev. N. B. Ripley will officiate, with the Rev. Wheaton Webb and the Rev. Walter Miller, pastor of the Baptist church at Westville, assisting. Burial will be in the family plot at the Westville cemetery.
