MRS. CLARK GOOKIN

Many friends throughout the county will learn with sorrow of the passing away of Mrs. Clark Gookin, which occured at her home in Benton township, this county, on Thursday morning, September 15, 1927, at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 12 days, after an extended illness.

Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev. I. W. Buchanan, were held at the Nazarene church at Chariton on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Chariton cemetery.

Mary, a daughter of Jacob and Harriett Myers, was born in New Florence, Westmoreland county, Penn., on February 3, 1849. She was united in marriage to Clark Gookin on Nov. 4, 1868. To this union were born ten children, two dying in infancy. She leaves to mourn their loss eight children, Joe, of Denver, Colo.; Lang, Harley, Mrs. Hattie Poush and Mrs. Addie Poush, of Lucas county; Will, and Mrs. Rosa Carlson, of Wayne county; Rev. Thomas Gookin of Olivet, Ill. Also thirty-six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, three sisters and one brother.

The deceased was one of a family of ten children of whom four remain, Mrs. Elizabeth Simpson, of Montana, Mrs. Addie Scovel and Mrs. Anna Angel, of California, and Daniel Myers of Lucas county.

Mrs. Gookin had been in poor health for the past year or more and most of that time almost totally blind, but bore her last illness with great patience and never a murmer of complaint. She was of a kind and cheerful disposition, a good neighbor, and was willing to lend a helping hand to the sick and sorrowful.

She will be sadly missed in the home and community but their loss is her gain. She gave her heart to God in early life and united with the Evangelical church at Mt. Carmel, then later united with the Nazarene church in Chariton. She lived a faithful consistent Christian life until her Saviour called her home.
