Francis A. Monahan, 83, formerly of 103 W. Carlton, died at 8:30 a.m., Monday, Sept. 7, 1981, at St. Joseph's Medical Center, Wichita.
He had been in ill health for the past 16 months.
He was born in Bevier, MO., on Dec. 4, 1897, to James and Katherine Derby Monahan. He came to Pittsburg at an early age with his parents. He began his coal-mining career at the age of 13. He worked in area coal mines for most of his life. He spent many years with the Clemens Coal Co. as a foreman and as a salesman in the wholesale coal divisio
He lived in Pittsburg most of his life except for 10 years from 1940-50 when he lived was employed by the Commercial Fuel Co., in Omaha, Neb.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, a charter member of American Legion Post No. 64, and served in World War I as an aviation machinist mate in the Navy.
He married Gladys R. Boone on April 28, 1920, in Pittsburg. She survives. Other survivors are one daughter, Mrs. William J. (Norma) Reals, Wichita; one brother, E.P. "Ted" Monahan, 1804 Cambridge Lane, two sisters, Virginia Monahan and Nellie Lindsay, both of 920 W. Forth St.; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Requiem mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with the Rev. Ivan Eck as the celebrant. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the McGravan-Quinn Funeral Home where the parish rosary will be at 7:30 p.m.
