Catherine Derby was the youngest of four children, and the only daughter born to Francis (Frank) and Mary (Flood) Derby of Glasgow, Scotland. The family came to the United States and Katie as she was called married James A Monahan July 25, 1886, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pittsburg, KS.
