Wyland E. "Gene" Hull, 85, of Columbia City, went to be with his Lord & Savior at 9:12 p.m., Monday, July 13, 2009 in the emergency room of Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

He was born November 17, 1923 in Richland Township, Whitley County a son of Russell P. and Mary G. (Cook) Hull. He completed his education at Larwill High School.

During World War II, he served in the United States Navy.

On Dec 7, 1941 He was united in marriage to Hazel Annedell Stump. Four children were born to this union, listed below.

On May 23, 1964 he was united in marriage to Dorothy J. Perry. They have always made their home in Columbia Township.

He retired in 1977 with 30 years of service from Dana.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Dorothy; four children, Sandra K. Cole of Ludlow Falls OH, Ruth Ann Stump of Westville, Vickie J. Scaife of Anchorage AK and Terry L. (Pamela) Hull of Fort Wayne; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and two great great granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by a grandson (LCPL Marc Cole, Find A Grave Memorial# 85150350); two sisters and three brothers, Virginia McCoy, Austin Hull, Keith Hull, Phil Hull and Norene Slack; his Father, Russel P. Hull, his Mother, Mary G. Shaffer; and his step father, Rudy Shaffer.

The funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 18, 2009 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Carroll McNutt officiating. Favorite hymns played during the prelude included "The Love of God", "Blessed Assurance", and "The Old Rugged Cross". The committal service followed at Nolt Cemetery. Casket Bearers were Terry Hull, Tony Hull, Aaron Stump, Christopher Johannes, Isaiah Spicer, Jesse McCoy, Terry Hively, and Tony Ficaro.

The Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard presented military honors at the cemetery. Participating were Don York, Jack Schrader, Frank Frey, Paul Gates, and Jim Shaw.
