Thomas Leo Yeates was the son of Frederick Thomas and Annie Francis Jessop Yeates. He was born in Millville and attended school here.

On April 14, 1917, he married Melba Harriet Shaw, the daughter of Charles William Shaw and Emma Maria Williams of Hyrum, Utah. She was born March 15, 1898.

Leo was a farmer, and they lived at Hyrum and Nibley. He served three home missions and was active in the LDS Church, serving in the Sunday School and YMMIA. He and Melba worked for many years on the Old Folks Committee. Melba died January 2, 1939.

He later married Ora Hurt Sparks.

Leo and Melba were parents of: Leo Keith (Fay Olsen), Troy Kendall (Ruth Paul), Merlin Dick (Lenore Thayer), Floyd Shaw (Fern Hardy), Barbara (Robert Williams), Helen Lavoy (Victor Christoffersen), Ruth (B. Ralph Godfrey) and Frederick Thomas (Linda McCann).
