Philander was the first school teacher in Herrick form 1836 through 1837.

Rev. Philander was a Presbyterian minister and was ordained as pastor of the church in East Canton in Sep 1848; resigned Mar 1857. When a new church was erected in Canton Village, Rev. Camp acted as pastor until one was selected. He served the church in Rome, PA 1847 to 1850.
