Thursday, June 27, 1957

Carrie Wilhelmina Lutz, daughter of George and Elizabeth Lutz, was born in Bushnell, Illinois, on May 14, 1863 and departed this life on June 21, at the age of 94 years, 1 month and 7 days.

She was united in marriage to Eugene A. Smith on September 30, 1885, and to them two sons were born: Guy W. Smith and Howard E. Smith.

When married, they moved to a farm four miles south of Russell and later, in 1888, purchased and moved to a farm four miles east of Russell. In 1894, a home was built in Russell, and in this home Mrs. Smith resided for 63 years.

On September 30, 1935, she and her husband celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. The husband, Eugene A. Smith, passed away on April 29, 1940.

Preceding her in death were three brothers: John, George and Nickolas Lutz; leaving one living sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Blanchard of Chariton, Iowa.

Also mourning her passing are her two sons, Guy W. and Howard E. Smith of Russell; six grandchildren, Charles Smith, Vernon Smith, Dorcas Davis, Gene Smith and Paul Smith, all of Russell, and Margaret Danner of Corydon. She leaves eight great-grandchildren and a large number of neighbors and friends.

Her mental faculties were keen and alert right up to the day of her passing. While confined to her home for the last two or three years, she did much reading and was always interested in local, state and national news.

She accepted Christ as her saviour at an early age and united with the Methodist Church in Russell during the pastorate of Rev. J. L. Johnson. She was a charter member of the Ladies Aid Society of the Methodist Church, and continued this membership thorughout her lifetime.

Always a cheeful and considerate person, she will be greatly missed by her sons and grandchildren, and her friends and neighbors. There will always be remembrance of a wonderful and loving mother and grandmother.

Funeral services were held in the Russell Methodist Church, the Rev. George Paterson, her pastor, in charge. Pall Bearers were her grandchildren, Charles, Vernon, Gene and Paul Smith, Earl Davis and Dave Danner. Carl Wright and Quincy Robb sang two songs of Mrs. Smith's own choosing, "In The Garden," and "Sweet Bye and Bye." Charles Wright was pianist. Interment was in the Russell Cemetery.
