Widely Known Resident Came To This Place From Georgia
J. T. B. Awbrey, widely known in this section as "Uncle Ben", died this morning at six o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. A. Pool. He was one of the pioneer citizens of this town, having come here nearly 50 years ago from Heard county, Ga., where he was born 87 years ago.
For many years he was a prominent and active figure in the life of this community and of Randolph county. He served for a long time as justice of the peace and established a fine reputation for his fairness in dispensing justice. He was a man of strong convictions and did not mind giving vigorous expression to them, but had a high regard for the honest convictions of others.
Many years ago Mr. Awbrey's health began to fail and for four or five years he had been confined to his bed. The faithful attention of Mr. and Mrs. Pool, with whom he lived, and of the other children was gladly given through these years of suffering and helplessness, but did not stop the gradual decline of his health until the end came.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at the Pool residence, with burial in the, local cemetery.
Surviving are four sons: B. D., T. L., Matt and Pate; and three daughters: Mrs. R. A. Wadsworth, Mrs. W. A. Pool and Mrs. B. B. Brannan. All of these are of Roanoke except Matt Awbrey.
