Robert E. Thoennes, 59, a steamfitter, was found dead in his garage at 1815 Elk St., Saturday afternoon. Death was ruled as a suicide by Tippecanoe County Coroner, Dr. William E. Sholty who also stated that Thoennes had been dead since Tuesday.

A native and life resident of Lafayette, Mr. Thoennes was a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 157 and St. Boniface Catholic Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the Battle of the Aleutian Islands and Ryukyus Islands. Mr. Thoennes was also a member of American Legion 11.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. John (Bernice) Zink and Mrs. Marjorie Byrd, both of Lafayette.

THOENNES, Robert E. -- Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. Monday at Murphy-Hahn and Zahn Funeral Home, 1105 Columbia St. with wake service there at 7 p.m. Funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, the Rev. Benno Heidlage officiating. American Legion graveside rites at St. Boniface Cemetery.
