On Nov 26, 1913, in Hallock, Minnesota, Jacob married Sena Julia Haugen, born in Minnesota (1892-1968). Sena was a daughter of Hans Haugen (1857-1908), and Maria Johnson (1859-1947), both born in Norway.
Jacob and Sena lived in Minnesota for a few years, moved to North Dakota for a short time, and settled again in Tegner, Kittson County, Minnesota into a life of farming.
Jacob and Sena had eight children. Doris Harriet Fertig-Meek, (1914-2009), Donald W. Fertig (1915-2002), Arnold Hayes Fertig (1917-1984), Evelyn Margaret Fertig-Gravgaard-Wolfe (1918-1983), Harris Kenneth Fertig (1921-1991), Glen LaMar Fertig (1923-2010), Rodney LuAllen Fertig (1926-1964), and the youngest was Keith Fertig.
Jacob died on Apr 1, 1957, in Kittson County and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery with his wife and other family members.
