Donald Wentzel Fertig was born on Sep 2, 1916, in Kittson County, Minnesota to parents Jacob Stanton Fertig (1886-1957) and Sena Julia Haugen (1892-1968), both born in Minnesota.

Donald was the second child in a family of eight children. His brothers and sisters:
Doris Harriet Fertig-Meek, (1914-2009), Arnold Hayes Fertig (1917-1984), Evelyn Margaret Fertig-Gravgaard-Wolfe (1918-1983), Harris Kenneth Fertig (1921-1991), Glen LaMar Fertig (1923-2010), Rodney LuAllen Fertig (1926-1964), and the youngest was Keith Fertig.

On Oct 22, 1938, in Hallock, Kittson, Minnesota, Donald married Margaret Mae Blair, (1919-1991). Margaret was a daughter of Andrew Blair, born in Ireland (1891-1974) and Gertrude Quiner, born in Iowa (1893-1994).

Donald and Margaret settled into a life of farming in Minnesota. The couple had four children: Donald, Marjorie, Bonnie, and Carolyn.

Both Donald and Margaret are buried in Hope Cemetery.
