NORRIS SPENCER, SR.

Funeral Services for Midland Park Man
Will be Held Monday

Midland Park -- Norris C. Spencer, Sr., 59, of 52 Bank Street, died at his home yesterday afternoon.

Born in Paterson, he resided for 39 years in the Borough. He was station agent for the New York Susquehanna and Western Railroad at Wortendyke and was a member of Trinity Reformed Church.

The funeral will be held Monday at 2 P.M. at the J.H. Olthuis and Son Funeral Home at 159 Godwin Avenue in charge of the Rev. W. E. Gaston. Burial will be in George Washington Memorial Park. Surviving are his wife Nellie; a son, Norris Jr. of Wyckoff; two grandchildren; three brothers, Frederick of East Paterson, Joseph of Chester, Pa., and Thomas of Paterson; and two sisters, Mrs. William Polglaze and Miss Alice Spencer, both of Clifton.

Pop-pop Spencer was the second child of Thomas & Alice Milnes Spencer of Paterson, New Jersey. I have been told he was a gentle man who loved children. I found that be owned a copyright to a song in the early 1900s in partnership with a friend of his. Perhaps he had the spirit of an entrepreneur. Unfortunately, he passed away long before I was born and I did not get to know him personally. My Mom always said I would have liked him.

He came from a family where his father was an alcoholic who finally quit drinking in the last 9 years of his life, long after Norris had left home. My grandfather did not drink and worked hard for his family right up until his death.
