THE PATERSON MORNING CALL, FRIDAY, DEC. 19, 1924

T.J. SPENCER DIED YESTERDAY
Was Well Known Silk Foreman and Bible Class Teacher.
----------------------------------------------------

Thomas J. Spencer who, for over a quarter of a century, has been prominent in local church and fraternal circles, passed away at his late residence, 308 Vreeland avenue, yesterday morning, after an illness of one week.

For the past ten years he had held a responsible position with the National Silk Dyeing company at their Dundee Lake plant, where he was in charge of silk cleaners. Previous to that, he was, for over ten years, in a responsible position with the National Ribbon company, and for some nine years with the Oriental Silk Printing company and Eastside Silk Dyeing and Printing company.

The deceased man possessed a wonderful personality and was ever alert with his words of kindness and advice for the young people with whom he came into contact and among whom he was a great favorite. He was the teacher of a large Bible class in the Eastside Terrace M.E. Church on Vreeland avenue, and some time previously he was an important factor in the organization of a Sunday school at Passaic Junction.

Early in 1898 he was made a member of Schubert lodge, No. 118, Knights of Pythias, of this city, and at once became deeply interested in the work, being elected prelate, then as vice-chancellor and finally as chancellor commander, in which position he served with credit and honor, becoming a past chancellor in January, 1900.

Members of the Schubert lodge will in all probability proceed to his late residence immediately after the close of tonight's meeting for the purpose of paying their last tribute of respect to his memory, executing the beautiful work of their ritual. Mr. Spencer was greatly enthused over the plans of the future in the lodge and was doing his bit in getting more than his portion of candidates for the August Heinrichs memorial page class initiation in the spring, as he and the late August Heinrichs were life-long friends.

Mr. Spencer was born Feb. 22, 1862 and in 1891 married Miss Alice Milnes, one of our most prominent Paterson families of the old Third ward. She survives him along with seven children; Robert Edward Spencer, who resides at Little Ferry; Norris C. Spencer, Wortendyke; Fred Spencer, of Preakness; Joseph F. Spencer of Waldwick, and Alice M. Spencer, Lucy M. Spencer and Thomas G. Spencer, who reside at home with their parents. Two children are deceased, Cerilla, who died in infancy, and a boy whose bodies are interred in the old Preakness Reformed cemetery, where the deceased man had expressed a desire to be buried with his children. He is also survived by a half-sister, Mrs. I. W. Ayers, of Long Branch, and a full sister Mrs. Margaret Bell, of this city.

The funeral services will be held at the Eastside Terrace M. E. Church on Vreeland avenue, at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, with the Rev. N. D. Guerry, a close friend of the deceased man, officiating.

---------------------------------------------------

Thomas arrived in the United States from Liverpool, England aboard the ship Manhattan, June 11, 1862. He was only 4 months old at the time.
