Joseph Benjamin “Mutt” Monroe, 85, on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at Bronte Nursing Home. He was a resident of Nolan, Texas. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 27, 2014 at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Wayne Sistrunk and Rev. Billy Oliver officiating. Interment will follow at Slater’s Chapel Cemetery.
Joseph was born June 9, 1929 in Nolan,TX to Lorenzo and Jessie Monroe. He lived in Nolan County area all of his life. Joseph held memberships at both Nolan Baptist Church and Blackwell Baptist Church. He taught carpentry at Sweetwater High School and he also built many homes around the city of Sweetwater.
Survivors include daughters, Brenda Smith (husband Gary), Rebecca Monroe, Sue White, Louisa Kirk (husband Paul); son, Jim Buck Monroe; sisters, Jessie Lou McReynolds, Minnie Ruth McCloud, Lanell Cogdell, Annette LeCompte and Yvonne Lister; special friend and caregiver, Ronda Webster; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Julia Fern Monroe (April 17, 1983) and second wife, Freda Lee Monroe (April 18, 2003); granddaughter, Randi Fernandez; siblings, Willie Faye Burrus, LD Monroe, RJ “Toad” Monroe and Birdie Rountree.
Pallbearers are his grandsons, Lee Smith, Todd Smith, AJ Monroe, Mark Monroe, Paul Kirk Jr., Tyler Williams and Cade McKee. Visitation will be on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at McCoy Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m until 7:00 p.m.
