She was born in Stanton, Michigan, a daughter of the late Elam and Lavina Gingrich Martin.
She was an active member of Akron Mennonite Church since 1961. Irene's interests included traveling, world events, and spending time with her nieces and nephews and their families. Irene was a very compassionate person who expressed it by her concern for the well being, including spiritual, of many persons. She often would comment about feeling blessed in spite of her failing eyesight and other health issues. She was quick to say, "I think of what I have, not of what I don't have."
During her working years, Irene was employed at the former Rosenau Brothers, the former Sears Roebuck in downtown Ephrata, and Sprecher's Hardware of Ephrata. After retirement, Irene continued to work as a volunteer at the MCC Re-Uzit Store in Ephrata until declining health.
Surviving are a brother, Ezra M. Martin, and a sister, Vera Martin, 60 nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ivan, and sisters, Sara, Anna, Rachel, Leah, Ellen, and Lavina.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday evening, January 16th, and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 17th, at the Akron Mennonite Church, 1311 Diamond Street, Akron. Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. in the adjoining church cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 11 A.M. with Pastors James Amstutz and Dawn Yoder-Harmes officiating.
Memorial contributions in Irene's memory may be sent to Mennonite Central Committee, P. O. Box 500, Akron, PA 17501 or Akron Mennonite Church, 1311 Diamond Street, Akron, PA 17501. Arrangements by Stradling Funeral Homes, Akron/Ephrata.
