He was born in Wayne Co. West Virgina on April 5,1840. He was tall and had red hair.
He enlisted in the army at the breaking out of the war serving in a WV regiment, Co. A, 1st Vet Infantry. He served as a scout during much of the time of enlistment, going from Private to Corporal and did good service for his country on many a bloody battlefield. Franklin served four years and was mustered out on account of the close of the war. He received a wound in the battle of Winchester, breaking a bone in his shoulder from which he suffered until the time of his death.
He came to Hamilton County, IN about 1882 and was elected Sheriff of Hamilton Co. in 1894. He campaigned on foot through the town. He was a staunch Republican. Story is: It didn't matter who the person was who was running for office,if they were Republican, he would vote for them. While serving as Sheriff, Franklin and his wife lived in the Jail. The Sheriff's wife would cook for the prisoner. The Jail was in the back of the house.
Franklin married Mary Parsons in 1870. She was born in North Carolina in 1850. They were married for 30 years and had eight children. They were: Edgar, Joseph Franklin, John, William, Emil, Albert, Milo, and Nora.
Franklin passed away on a Saturday moring in late September of 1900. He was 60 yrs old. The funeral took place on Monday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. from the family residence on East Division St. Rev. Graham of Fishers Station officiated. Services were under the auspices of the different Masonic lodges of the county and the G.A.R. post of Noblesville and Westfield. Internment was in Crownland Cemetery, Noblesville, IN. Sec 9, Lot 21. This section is one fo the oldest in the cemetery.
