This is the best hypothesis I am able to make regarding the burial place of Jane Thacker. I know that there are scads of unmarked, subsided graves in the Thacker cemetery, and many marked only with fieldstones. I also know Joseph was a "Primitive Baptist," although there are some in his family who were Episcopalians. I know that some in the family did not want gravestones, an old Baptist custom. I put more weight on a Thacker cemetery burial than a burial next to her father-in-law, Reuben Thacker Jr., in Lawrence County, Ohio, or in a county cemetery in Boyd or Lawrence Counties, Kentucky.

Jane Thacker was illiterate, poor, and lived with her unmarried son, Reuben, whom the census takers labelled an "idiot." Jane and her son, Reuben, last show up in the Boyd County, Kentucky, 1870 census. She was the daughter of William Rutherford, b. 1789 in VA, died May 1860 in Wayne, Wayne County, WV, and Margaret Hill Rutherford, b. 1798 in NC, died 1830 in Wayne, Wayne County, WV (it was then Cabell County, VA, until 1842).

Gravesite Details

If not under a fieldstone, the grave is unmarked, which I strongly suspect due to her poverty, or her religious beliefs. I note that many Thackers were Baptists, though some were Episcopalian. In her time, many Baptists didn't have tombstones.
