Doris Imogene Turvey, 82, of Topeka, went to heaven to celebrate Jesus birth on Christmas day, December 25, 2008. She was in her home surrounded by her loving family and caregiver, Christy Layne.
Doris was born June 3, 1926 on the Kersten family farm near Vassar, the daughter of Emil Ezra and Louise Anna Miller Kersten. She attended elementary school in Vassar and worked as a waitress in order to attend high school in Lyndon. There she met her high school sweetheart, Frank Eugene "Gene" Turvey. They were married on December 31, 1945 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on May 22, 2008. They will celebrate their 63rd wedding anniversary together in heaven. Doris was also preceded in death by a brother, Rawlin Kersten and three sisters, Verla White, Mildred Ashwill and Marjorie Ogle.
Survivors include her children: Steven and Geri Turvey, Debra and Randy Richardson, and Lonna and David Latimer, all of Topeka; a sister-in-law Virginia Kersten of Lyndon; a brother-in-law, Harry Turvey and his wife, Nita, of Topeka; seven grandchildren: Kristy Hanshaw along with husband, John, Scott Richardson and fiancée, Kristin King, Arin Turvey Evans, Ryan Turvey and his fiancée, Mandy King, and Erik, Mark, and Nick Latimer; and two great-granddaughters: Tessaira Rose Evans and Tayler Jaye Hanshaw; and another great-granddaughter on the way, Raegan Turvey.
Doris worked as a Lunch Room Secretary at Lafayette Elementary and began babysitting her grandchildren in 1979. She also babysat for many families while being a homemaker and accomplished cook, with a specialty of making cinnamon rolls and pies for church dinners and to give to others. She was an active member of the Oakland United Methodist Church and the Pioneer Sunday School Class as well as the United Methodist Women. Doris's life was full of faithfulness and service to others. She taught Sunday School for many years and loved to give hugs to everyone.
Doris will live on in our hearts forever and will be remembered and loved for her kind and caring ways, positive outlook on life, willingness to take time to listen and be available to lend a helping hand and an encouraging word. She was devoted to her family as well as, being a wonderful role model for her children as they grew up. It was a pleasure to sit in her kitchen at the table and watch her spoil her grandchildren with that special birthday dinner and beautifully decorated birthday cake.
She will always be loved and cherished and we will miss her deeply. She is now with dad once again and with our loving savior, Jesus Christ. We will see them again in heaven.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at the Oakland United Methodist Church.
A committal service will follow at the Mount Hope Mausoleum Chapel with interment in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Mrs. Turvey will lie in state after 3:00 p.m., Monday, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka where the family will receive friends from 6:00 -8:00 p.m.
