William Moses James was born in 1841 to William and Mary Ann James. It is believed that the family resided in Fulton County, Georgia until a few years before the Civil War. The family is in the 1860 census in Walker County, Alabama. On Feb 22, 1862 William enlisted in the 28th Alabama, Company F, Confederate Infantry Regiment. There are letters written by William to his intended Elizabeth, and a historical book to support these facts. It is also believed that William remained in the CSA until the end, upon the surrender at Appomatax.

Letter written to Elizabeth on Jan 8, 1864, at a Camp near Dalton, Georgia, includes this poem:

When this you see
Remember me
Though many miles
Apart we be.

Although we can not locate a marriage license, it has been notated in a family bible held by a many great-grandaughter that they were married on Sept 3, 1865. This bible previously owned by William and Orpha Elizabeth's youngest daughter Della Reynolds of Oklahoma, also noted the birth dates of the 9 children.
