Her birth date was provided in the 1926 obits indexed in the Randolph County GENWEB.Several letters found in the memorabilia of one of her daughters Della Reynolds, suggest that she and William were known to each other before the Civil War. The letters found, were a combination of writings from some Spaulding boys, who are believed to be her step-brothers. Also letters from William James and some other prospective suitors.
Sarah Bradford, was also the mother of Sarah Jane (Lauderdale) Spaulding, wife of John P Spaulding. Another sister, Nancy Lauderdale Self, remained in Alabama, as a letter written on July 27, 1872 indicates. These families came from Blount and Walker counties in Alabama in the late 1860's.
