Spouse of Ida Sawyer
brother of Royal Alfred, Sylvia May (Nabholz), Noah William Sawyer, Ernest Ray, Anna Arzelia (Erbb), Edwin Levi, Spencer Alva, Charles Ross, Sarah Myrtle (Langland), Etta Blanche (McCormick), and Frederick Dudley
Children: Inez Mae, Leslie William, Lottie, May, Lena Belle, Kenneth Louis, Marjorie Helen, and Paul Eugene.
Paul Eugene Sawyer was born in Bedford, Ohio in 1878. He moved to Urbana, Iowa with his parents when he was a small boy. Here he lived until 1907 when he moved to Minnesota with his wife, Ida and two children. Railroads were the only mechanized form of transportation and timber was the big industry. Here Gene found work until the logging boom started to die down. In 1910 he homesteaded 2 ½ miles south of Hackensack. Later he cleared a farm north of Backus where he lived until he passed away. He spent 64 years in Cass County and raised six children. Farming was his main occupation.
Though there was no big money to be made and work was scarce as depression was on, yet many friends recall sitting at his table and finding lodging at his home. We cannot recall when there was not plenty of food for all and everyone was made welcome.
Gene loved his country and fellowman. He always thought of others before himself. He was interested in the leaders of his county and believed in honesty. He could say with the Apostle Paul, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.:
We believe Heaven is a brighter place because of his departure. Though he is gone from us his memory will long be remembered.
