N. J. WIXOM IS CALLED HOME
Pioneer Resident of the Valley for 60 Years Dies After Lingering Illness.
Another of San Bernardino valley’s oldest pioneers, whose lives and reminiscences are entwined about incidents of history of California, joined his Maker last night when Nathan Jasper Wixom, 75 years of age and a member of the well-known pioneer family of the same name, died at his home in 465 D street. The aged pioneer’s health had been failing for some time and his passing was not entirely unexpected, many members of the family being aware of his precarious condition and were at his bedside when life passed out.
Like fiction are the pages of his life written. Early in 1850, his parents in Illinois joined the throng of wealth seekers, where the news of gold discovery had spread from.
The Wixoms were among the first to arrive in San Bernardino valley. The city was then marked by a newly constructed fort, in which the small band of whites lived in constant fear of massacre by the Indians.
Famous Bear Hunter
Nathan Jasper Wixom grew to manhood in the valley. He became one of the most famed horse traders in the state and was known throughout the state. His prowess at hunting the grizzly bear in the mountains was also widespread. Aside from the sporting qualities he was also known as a friend of mankind. Many people knew that he was readier to spend the night with the sick than with the younger people.
In after life he entered the harness making business here and for years was a member of the fire department. His brother, David Wixom, was chief.
During recent years he was a member of the Pioneer society where he again displayed the public-spirited qualities and was one of the best known pioneers in the valley.
He married Miss Rebecca Berry and a daughter, Mrs. Jessie Forest, was their only child.
He is survived by a wife, Mrs. Rebecca Wixom, a daughter, Mrs. Jessie Forest, two brothers, D. H.and Charles Wixom, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Crandall and Mrs. Cynthia Payne, besides numerous grandchildren and cousins among whom are W. D. Wixom, George H. Wixom, Lester Purtell, Lester Payne and Roy and Walter Forest.
The funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Elder T. W. Williams of Los Angeles reading the service. The Pioneer Society will attend in a body.
Interment will be in the Pioneer cemetery. The J. D. McDonald company will have charge.
