DAVID WIXOM, WIDELY KNOWN PIONEER, DEAD
was Resident of California Since 1850
Slight Improvements in His Condition Gave Family Hope
David H. Wixom, one of the most widely known figures in San Bernardino County, died yesterday morning at his home, 1078 D Street, from the effects of a severe stroke of paralysis which had rendered his left side powerless since Dec. 18.
The stroke had been received while Mr. Wixom was seated at breakfast. In the days that followed he seemed to show slight signs of improvement but lately his condition had become gradually worse. Most of the members of his family were near him at the end, death being expected for the past few days. Death, which came yesterday morning at six o’clock, proved a shock to his family and many friends.
The death of Mr. Wixom marks the passing of a man who has written as much into the history of this country, perhaps, as any one man. With a record of 72 years in California, the greater part of which was spent in this county, Mr. Wixom has taken a prominent part in public affairs for many years. He is known as “Dave” Wixom by hundreds of friends.
Was 74 Years Old
Mr. Wixom was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on February 7, 1848, making him almost 75 years old at the time of his death. When he was three years old his parents, Nathan and Betsey Wixom, prepared to move to California. The perilous journey was made by means of the ox team. After undergoing scores of dangers and hardships the family arrived in Monterey County in December, 1851.
A very few years later, the family moved to San Bernardino, settling on a ranch in Lytle Creek, near what is now known as Glenn Ranch. David Wixom attended the public schools in San Bernardino.
Reaching young manhood, Mr. Wixom went into the farming and teaming business here. For a time while engaged in teaming, he resided in Prescott, Ariz., but he returned to San Bernardino to make his home after a few years.
Held many Public Offices
In 1882, Mr. Wixom was elected city marshal and served two terms. He was deputy assessor for four years and also filled the office of fire chief here for five years. He was also a member of the city council for two terms, and a school trustee.
Between the times he held public offices, he engaged in ranching and was for a time connected with a laundry business here. He took up a homestead in the mountain country which is now known as Blue Jay Camp, near lake Arrowhead.
Was Member of Large Family
Mr. Wixom was the tenth of a family of 12 children. Two of them, Mrs. Mary Ann Crandall and Mrs. Cynthia Paine of Pomona, survive. In 1886, he married Ann Stuchberry, who also survives, as do four children, Mrs. W. B. Reeves, Arthur H. Wixom of San Bernardino; David W. Wixom of Colton; and Mrs. Frank M. Meisner of Calabassa.
