Willard Wixom Passes Into Beyond
After Lingering Illness the Father of Mayor Wixom Succumbs, Age79
After an illness that kept him confined for a long period, Willard Wixom, aged 79, father of Mayor George H. Wixom and member of one of the most prominent pioneer families of this valley, passed away yesterday afternoon about 5 o’clock at the county hospital where he had been surrounded with the best of attention to brighten the last days of his life, it having been known for several weeks that he was close to the brink of the other world.
Mayor Wixom had been called to Redlands to speak at the funeral of the late William J. Singleton and knew that when he returned to this city he might find that his father had breathed his last.
Mrs. Sarah Roberts, a daughter, and other members of the family, were with him when the end came. The remains are in charge of Stephens & Son and arrangements will be announced later.
Mr. Wixom was born in LaSalle County, Illinois, November 23, 1836. He moved while still a boy from the home of his birth to Nauvoo, Illinois, some distance from Chicago.
The family came to California in 1861 and at first lived near San Juan mission in Monterey county. They came to San Bernardino in 1865 and purchased 80 acres of land north of the city. Mr. Wixom was for many years a blacksmith and wagon maker. Later he went into the mining business and was the first man to discover gold in Lytle Creek Canyon.
On August 30, 1865, he married Miss Anna Allen, and four children were born to them, Mrs. Sarah Roberts, Alexander and George H. Wixom, the present mayor, of the city, and a daughter who died at the age of 2 years.
When G. H. Wixom was 4 years of age, his parents separated.
Later Mr. Wixom married Mrs. Annie Lee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lee, September 8, 1887. From this marriage two children were born, Misses Lillian and Rosalind Wixom of Thatcher, Arizona. An adopted son, Rupert Lee Wixom, lives in Arizona.
Three brothers, Jasper, David and Charlie, of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Crandall and Cynthia Payne of Thatcher, Arizona, of Mr. Wixom’s family, survive.
