She was born to Andrew and Sarah (DeVries) Leep on Dec. 10, 1914 in Swift Current, in the southwestern part of the Canadian south central province Saskatchewan, about 45 miles southeast of the former Dutch settlement Cramersburg, where the family homesteaded.
Animal diseases, coldness, dust bowls, drought, grasshopper invasions, several successive crop failures and low grain prices caused them to leave Canada and in 1921 the family moved to Shepherd, Yellowstone County, Montana, where the family stayed for about five years.
In 1927, they moved back to Illinois, where Mary's family had previously lived.
She married Otto Schmidt on 22 October 1954. They spent their retirement years in Mount Vernon, Washington until his death in 1962.
In 1987, she moved to Manhattan to be near her family.
She is survived by a half-brother, Tony Leep, of Michigan; a step-son, Don Schmidt, of Florida; a step-daughter, Marietta RosKamp, of Iowa; a step-son-in-law, of Lanning, Mich.; step-grandchildren and great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was a member of Manhattan Christian Reformed Church. She will be remembered as a faithful prayer warrior and active church member.
A graveside service will be held at Churchill Cemetery.
