At his appointed time on Jan. 31, 2002, Woodey B. Searle returned home to his Heavenly Father. He was born on March 3, 1919 in Vernal, to Raymond and Zina Batty Searle. Lighting in 1923 killed his father and so his loving mother and relatives who were willing to help reared Woodey. His life was one of concern and love for his community and the people in it. He loved people. He loved having them around him and visiting with them.

He served in many capacities in his community, He was president of the Vernal Roping Club. He was president of the Chamber of Commerce. He was president of the Utah LP Gas Association. He belonged to the Utah Wool Growers Association and often did their auctioning. He was an avid supporter of the Vernal Jr. Livestock Show many times purchasing the Grand Champions. He supported youth in every way possible. He served for many years on the hospital board. He sponsored many benefit rodeos for families who suffered losses and tragedies in their lives.

He was a businessman of long standing in the community. He owned and operated Searle Gas Company, Searle Saving Center, Searle Cattle Company, Searle Saddles, Diamond Hills Motel (Now Rodeway Inn), and Diamond Hills Café (now Win On), Valley Tractor, and that which he enjoyed most Diamond Hills Ranches, one on little Brush Creek and one on the Rim of Diamond Mountain.

One of his greatest joys was the success of his World Champion Cutting Horse Holey Sox. What pleasures this horse brought into his life. Along with his wife Vonetta he enjoyed attending the Rodeo Finals every year except this past one because of his lingering illness with cancer. They encouraged young people to get an education and did all they could to help them by giving countless scholarships every year at Uintah High School.

They worried about others who needed help. They had braces put on the teeth of children whose parents could not afford them. They gave special glasses to those who suffered from Macular Eye Degeneration as he did. They took care of the widows and the fatherless that needed help beyond their ability to help themselves. They bought groceries for people to lighten their loads of care. They gave free dinners from their restaurant to the widows on Mothers Day and Easter Lilies at Easter time. For many years they delivered cases and cases of strawberries to friends and family all over the valley. They gave boxes of chocolate to those at the care center on Valentines and other times when they felt there was a need. They shared their wealth with others, freely giving of their material goods.

He is survived by his sweetheart Vonetta Schanno Searle. They were married June 14, 1974. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Provo LDS Temple.

He was the father of six children, Doletta Goicoa of Reno, Nev.; Raymond E. Searle who preceded him in death; Rance W. Searle; Sonja (Lon) Seeley; Rhett A. (Lola) Searle; and Randy B. (Vickie) Searle all of Vernal; daughter-in-law, Toni Searle Cowdell of Layton; Donna Searle of Texas and Gail Fischel of Estes Park, Colo.; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; two brothers, Jay Lincoln (Alberta) Searle and Milton H. (Elva) Searle of Vernal. He is preceded in death by his grandson, Woodey B. Searle II and his granddaughter Michele McNeill.

Funeral services were held on Feb. 4, in the Ashley 2nd Ward Chapel. Burial will be in the Maser Fairview Cemetery, under the direction of Thomson Blackburn Vernal Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Woodey B. and Vonetta Searle Scholarship Fund at Wells Fargo Bank in Vernal.

Bishop Michael Alexander conducted. Pallbearers were Lon Seeley, Rance Searle, Rhett Searle, Lynn Cuch, Scott Allred, Gary Showalter, Dawson Seeley and Bruce Nay. Honorary pallbearers were Milton Searle and Jay Searle. Compassionate services were provided by Ashley 2nd Ward Relief Society. Family prayer was offered by Milt Searle.

Prelude and postlude music provided by Diane Batty. Emily Christiansen was the chorister, and Diane Batty was the organist. Dawnson Seeley gave the invocation. Bishop Michael Alexander gave the obituary. Remarks were given by Paul Searle and George Searle. Musical, "How Great Thou Art," performed by Denice Allen and accompanied by Daun DeJournette. Remarks given by Sonja Seeley and Alana Searle. Musical, "Oh My Father," performed by LaDee Christensen and accompanied by Diane Batty. Sheldon Galley gave remarks. The congergation sang "Abide With Me; Tis Eventide." Benediction was given by Max Rasmussen. Lon
