Jay was the father of Vickie Edgerton of Anderson, S.C. and Terry (Sherrie) of Vernal. Jay was also step-father to Dale Ross (Carillon) of Vernal, Glade Ross (Sharon) of Rangely and Darwin Ross of Riverside, Calif. He is also survived by a brother, Milton (Elva) Searle of Vernal; by grandchildren — Jeff, Stacie, Trent, Brett, Brady and Kenny and by great-grandchildren — Shyann, Trevon and Bradon.
Jay served in the Air Corps in World War II where he met a lovely young nurse, Priscilla (Pat) Grant and brought her back to Vernal. Pat died of cancer in May of 1991. Later while attending dances at the Golden Age Center, he met Alberta Williams whom he married in 1992. They had been married 12 years when she passed away in 2004.
Jay Searle had a reputation as a very honest man in his dealings with his fellow men. He also enjoyed a reputation as a good dancer; he was a regular at the Golden Age Center in Vernal and a frequent dancer at the Senior Citizens Center in Roosevelt. He was a very good-natured, cheerful man and was without peer as a story teller. Jay was respected and loved by all who knew him and will be very much missed.
Jay was also preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, a sister and a great-grandson.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served several years as a scoutmaster.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 22 at 11 a.m. at the Vernal 3rd Ward, 475 West 100 North, with viewings Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in the Maeser Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion. Services will be under the direction of Spafford Funeral Home.
