Thomas Olinthus Hamilton was born on September 8, 1857, in Red River County or Kaufman County, Texas. His was the fifth of his parents' children. His parents were Rufus Hamilton and Martha Ballard Hamilton. He was the grandson of Robert Shaw Hamilton and his wife Elizabeth Bethea Hamilton. He was also the grandson of Barclay Moorman Ballard and Mary Gillentine Ballard.

On November 22, 1880, when he was 23 and she was 20, Thomas married pretty Sallie Gresham who was from Kaufman County. Although they had no children, Thomas and Sallie stayed busy with their farm and, in the early 1920's, a general store. They lived in Kaufman County all their adult lives.

Thomas died just past his 79th brithday on September 18, 1936. He and Sallie had been married for 55 years. His beloved Sallie died six years later when she was 82. They were buried side by side in Rader Cemetery in Kaufman County.
