Mary Elizabeth "Elizabeth" Hamilton was born on September 12, 1852, in Red River County or Kaufman County, Texas. She was the third child of her parents Rufus Hamilton and Martha Ballard Hamilton. She was the granddaughter of Robert Shaw Hamilton and his wife Elizabeth Bethea Hamilton. She was also the granddaughtger of Barclay Moorman Ballard and Mary Gillentine Ballard.

Elizabeth did not marry. As did her older sister Sarah, Elizabeth lived in her parents' household until their deaths. After her parents's deaths, she and Sarah moved into the household of first their brother Robert and then their brother Davis.

Elizabeth died at the age of 79 on October 26, 1931, in Kaufman County, Texas, where she had lived most or all of her life. Her sister Sarah who had been her life-long companion died about four months later. Elizabeth and Sarah were buried not far from their parents' graves in Rader Cemetery, Kaufman County, Texas.
