William Joseph Dempsey was born 10 July 1923 to Thomas Bartholomew and Josephine Florence Smith Dempsey. He had an older brother Paul and later three more siblings. He was raised in the Depression but both his mother and father had jobs. Dad in the Post Office and mom at the movie theater. In his senior year at Morristown High School Pearl Harbor was bombed and he enlisted in the US Coast Guard. He served until 1945 on destroyers as a fireman.
He married Margaret Lesette "Peggy" Gannon 22 Oct. 1949 in St. Margaret RC Church in Morristown.
He worked in the Morris County Saving Bank on South Street most of his adult life. He was also a postal worker, milk man, bartenter and father of 10 children. They lived in Morris Plains until his death.
He died from pneumonia after a short illness on 2 Jan 1969 in Memorial Hospital Morristown, New Jersey
