Thomas was born in Tenafly, NJ where his maternal grandparents Thomas and Bridget Lahey lived. He was raised in Morristown by his parents William Clifford and Margaret Anastasia Lahey Dempsey. He enlisted in the army in WWI. He was a plumber at the time. After the war he and his brother worked for the US Post Office for most of their lives. Thomas married Josephine Florence Smith Oct. 16, 1921 in the Rectory of Assumption Church in Morristown. They had five children. Thomas and Florence retired to Pompano Beach florida. They returned to live the final years in Morristown.
