1828 Oct 11 - Hinds Co., Mississippi: Berry was the son John Bownds and his wife, Mary Saphronia "Polly" Cooley. His father, John was a farmer and a preacher.

1850 - Jasper Co., Mississippi: US Census, Berry is living with his parents and siblings in Jasper County, Mississippi.

1850 Aug 8 - Hines Co., Mississippi: Berry married Jane Thomas. Jane was the daughter of John Covington Thomas and his wife, Sarah Terrell. Her father, John, served as a Mississippi State Senator and Representative. (Date is according to Bownds Bible record).

1852 Feb 13 - Arkansas: Daughter, Julia Narcissus Bownds, was born.

1856 Jul 12 - Drew Co., Arkansas: Son, John Covington Bownds is born.

1858 Dec 27 - Pine Bluff, Jefferson Co., Arkansas: Son William Ira Bownds is born.

1860 - US Census: Bosque County, Texas, living with wife, Jane, and children.

1861 Mar 27 - Texas: Daughter, Susan Avaline Bownds, born.

1862 Jul 2 - Texas: Berry joined the Confederate States Army.
