James Bownds was killed where Peach Creek Road crosses Peach Creek, about 3 miles northwest of Jeddo, by a man named Richard Whitehead. Mr. Whitehead was put on trial for Mr. Bownds' murder, but was acquitted as Mr Bownds had allegedly shot at Mr. Whitehead first, knocking the saddlehorn off of Whitehead's saddle. The shooting was allegedly the result of bad blood between Bownds and a man by the name of Henry Lundy, who, along with another man was accompanying Mr. Whitehead when they encountered Mr. Bownds at the Peach Creek bridge.

The first records of James Bownds in Bastrop County, Texas, date from 1880 when he and members of his extended family appear on both Census records and Bastrop tax rolls. In 1880, he appeared in the census in Jeddo, Bastrop, Texas with wife Martha J. (Henderson) and children: Mary L., 25; Nancy E., 22; Susan A[deline], 20; Lucretia J[ane], 17; Martha A., 12; Emma F., 9; and Dora D., 6. James was employed as a "book agent."

In 1870, he was a farmer living near Madisonville, Madison, Texas, with wife Martha J. and children: Thomas B[enton], 17; Mary F., 15; Nancy E., 13; Susan H., 10; L[ucretia] Jane, 9; and Martha, 2.

In 1860 James had lived near Hillsboro in Hill County Texas with wife Martha and children: Benton, 7; Mary, 5; Nancy, 3; and Adoline , 4 months.

James married Martha Henderson of Kentucky in Lavaca County, Texas, on August 4, 1852.

In 1850, James was recorded by the Census living on a farm in Jasper County, Mississippi, with parents John and Mary and siblings: Berry, 22; William, 17 [14]; Susan, 16; Andrew, 12; Jane, 9; John, 7; and Morgan, 2.

Note on place of birth: The 1850 census lists South Carolina as the place of birth for all member of James' family. James and his siblings, including his older brother Berry, have Mississippi listed as their place of birth in subsequent censuses. An unknown contributor has further specified Hinds County , Mississippi, as the place of birth for James but the provenance of that information is unknown. The preponderance of known sources point to Mississippi.
