In the diary of Edward's neighbor, Joseph B. Lightsey, recorded 12 Oct 1853, Joseph wrote an accounting of Edward's experience in the Revolutionary War. The story was told by Edward to John L. Lightsey, who related it to his son, Joseph.

The story tells how Edward, along with a company of men, were taken prisoner by the Tories. He and the men were tied and put in a "bull pen". A guard was stationed at the door, while others were eating and drinking heavily.

The story goes that it was past midnight and all were sleeping when Edward was able to untie his hands. He then untied the other prisoners. He then told them they must escape, because they had been condemned to be hanged in the morning.

Edward said he would knock the guard down and would run past him and the others should follow. All, but one prisoner agreed to do so. They succeeded in in escaping, with the Tories firing their guns after them, without affect.

Edward and the others ran until they reached the American camp. With the other Americans they went back and attacked the Tories. They killed and captured all the Tories. The captured Tories met the fate that was planned for the captured Americans.
