Mardene Moulton Folkersen Provost
AUGUST 14, 1929 – APRIL 23, 2023

On Sunday morning, April 23, 2023, at 93 years of age, Mom once again met her beloved L. Ron, who preceded her in death by 24 years.

Born to Hyrum Chase and Margaret Lillian Cummings Moulton on August 14, 1929 in Heber City, Utah. She was the ninth of eleven children, and the sixth girl. Her parents, all of her siblings, all but one of their spouses, and her granddaughter Sarah preceded her in death.

In 1935, when Mardene was six, the family moved to Salt Lake City to find work, and relief, from the Great Depression, settling in Sugarhouse as part of the Lincoln Ward. Mom attended Brigham Young University before meeting Ron, who attended the University of Utah. Their "mixed marriage" resulted in them having to watch rivalry games from different rooms. During this time, they formed a Study Group with ten other couples, which was a fun social group who met monthly. The fun extended to parties and trips with their entire families for many years, and was a true source of friendship and joy for her. All but two of those special friends have preceded her in death.

Mardene and Ron were blessed with seven children, Brad (Marci), twins Keith (Laurie) and Kevin (deceased), Leslie, Roger (Diann), Larry (Traci), and Kathleen. Her children have further produced thirty (30) grandchildren and forty (40) great-grandchildren.

From July 1972 to July 1975, the family lived in Sweden, where Mardene and Ron served as Mission President "parents" to hundreds of Elder and Sister Missionaries. Mom took that opportunity by the horns, and made sure every missionary knew how to lead music, cut up a chicken, cook, mend, clean and properly iron clothing. She and Monica Karlson, a sister missionary, compiled a cookbook of simple meals the missionaries could make. Going to Sweden was truly a blessing for all of us. Catching up with those missionaries since their missions has brought her great joy, including a well-timed 50-year Jubilee Swedish Mission reunion in 2022.

Mom cared for all the needs of the children at home, while supporting our dad in his many callings with the Church and his 32-year career with First Security Bank.

The most incredible thing happened after our father passed away in 1999. Sterling Provost (who, coincidently, had asked mom out on her first date in high school) saw and recognized her maiden name of Moulton in dad's obituary. Sterling had recently lost his own dear wife, Beverly. Sterling made our mother smile again. They began attending scripture study classes and rekindled a beautiful friendship. They were married on April 5, 2000. For fifteen years Sterling treated mom like a queen, protected her, and took her traveling around the world. We whole-heartedly loved and welcomed not only Sterling, but also his daughter Gayle, her husband Pete, and their four children into our family. Sterling passed away in 2014 but we will forever cherish the memories and relationships we were able to build in the time we had with him. We all miss Sterling's bear-hugs, booming voice, impromptu gospel discussions, and piano playing.

Mom served as a Primary Teacher, Class President, Chorister, Choir Director, YW Advisor and President, Ward and Stake Relief Society Counselor and President, Float Committee Chairman, Extraction Worker, Ordinance Worker, Mission Mom, Assistant to the Director of Church Service Missionaries (dad). However, her favorite callings were those of mom, sister, aunt, grandma, great-grandma, neighbor and friend. For over eight years, she greeted new residents of her assisted living centers like she was still the Relief Society President. We honor and cherish her, and her constant compassionate service to others. If you knew our mom, you were undoubtedly served by our mom.

Mom's now aged hands could, at one time, lead music in any pattern from 2/4 to 12/8 time, decorate wedding cakes, make lists, paint, knit, cook the most delicious meals, sew exquisite dresses, make lists, hand-stitch 27 temple aprons for her posterity, play the piano, play card games, bandage skinned knees, write shorthand, type theses, make lists, crochet leper bandages, quilt, wipe away tears, and assist others in the temple. However, her favorite pastime was clipping and filing away articles, recipes, poetry, jokes and inspirational or funny stories from magazines, newspapers and the internet - which she would use when she gave one of her many talks, save in piles for us to take home each time we visited her, or retype and send to one of you. The dawn of the personal computer age left many of her generation behind, but she embraced it, and used it, like it was her superpower. Her 498-page personal history was one of her crowning achievements, even though it cannot be uploaded to Family Search because of its numerous copyright violations. (You can purchase your very own copy on Amazon!)

Mom taught us how to pray, sing, pretend, read the scriptures, teach Family Home Evening lessons, organize, plan, record special memories, correct our own grammar, serve, and most importantly…make gravy. Oh, and she also taught us how to make our own lists!

Four days before she passed, Mardene held and laughed with her two newest great grandchildren and felt a granddaughter's baby-bump containing the next one (number 41) which is due any day. Now that she has transitioned, she finally gets to be a mother to Kevin, who lived only a brief period of time. They have both been waiting for that blessed reunion for 63 years. Mom is now exactly where she wants to be, among her beloved family and friends at the feet of her Savior.

Mom's funeral celebration will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Brighton Hillside Ward chapel at 7075 S. 2245 E., in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, 84121. There will be a viewing Friday, April 28, 2023 (Happy Birthday Leslie!) from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Mountain Daylight Time, and again Saturday, April 29, 2023, from 10:00 to 11:45 A.M., with the services to follow at 12:00. The funeral service will be streamed live via ZOOM at https://zoom.us/j/99310018866. Mom will be laid to rest at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Drive, Millcreek, Utah, 84106
