J.G. (James Hamilton Gordon) Witherspoon was born in Waterloo, AL and came to Holdenville, OK in 1903 to take a position in a bank. His future wife Elizabeth Bres Marable was also living in Holdenville at the time and they became acquainted and decided to marry.

They married in Holdenville, OK (Indian Territory) Oct. 27, 1907 shortly before statehood Nov. 16, of that year. Oct. 27 was also the date of his sister Rosa Adela's birthday. He and Elizabeth were married for 50 years. See their pictures to the right around the time of their marriage. Soon after their marriage they moved to Shawnee, OK where he worked as a traveling salesman for Cudahy Meats. They then lived briefly in Durant, OK.

In the 1909 Shawnee City Directory they were living at 131 S. Center. His half brother James Rufus Franklin Witherpoon (Find a Grave #49278743) was also living in Shawnee at the time at 502 N. Louisa Ave. His mother Dora Witherspoon was living with J.G. and Elizabeth Witherspoon at that time.

They moved to Ada in 1915. He was a successful and well liked, long time businessman, civic and church administration leader in Ada, OK. He was also on the school board. He was a Mason. He founded and ran the Witherspoon Finance Company for many years in Ada.

They had 3 boys and 2 girls. One boy Joseph (Joe) Ray "Bunny" and one girl Mary Adella died in childhood. He had 7 grandchildren. One of his ancestors was John Witherspoon, signer of the Declaration of Independence. J.G.'s parents were Rev. James Hamilton Witherspoon (buried in Richardson Cemetery in Waterloo, AL) and Dora Witherspoon (Mary Medora Lucas Witherspoon) (who is buried in Rosedale Cemetery in Ada, OK). He had a sister Rosa Adela Witherspoon (buried in Richardson Cemetery, Waterloo AL).

J.G.'s children were Dorothy Elizabeth Witherspoon Price, Phillip Edgar Witherspoon (buried in Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene, TX), Gordon Marable Witherspoon (buried in Llano Cemetery,Amarillo, TX), Joe Ray "Bunny" Witherspoon (buried in Rosedale Cemetery in Ada OK), and Mary Adella Witherspoon (buried in Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee, OK). He is buried next to his beloved wife Elizabeth, his son Joseph (Joe) Ray "Bunny", daughter Dorothy Price and her husband Orval, and great grandson Matthew Alvin Files.

J.G.'s grandchildren are Nancy Ann Price, Susan Kay Price, Susan Kay Price Files, Linda Kate Witherspoon Beatty, Beth Witherspoon Williamson, Jeanne Witherspoon Wray, Betty Jean Witherspoon Brega, and Sarah Ann Witherspoon Paul.

Funeral services were held the next day (Monday)at 4:00 p.m. at the First Methodist Church in Ada, OK.

J.G. had several strokes and they were believed to be his cause of death. He died peacefully in his home.
