Sarah J. "Sallie" Witherspoon Howell (Howel) was born in Laruderdale Co., probably in Waterloo, AL. She married Benjamin E. Howell, brother of Captain Lee Howell, who fought in the Civil War on March 17, 1868. He died 1877 in Hardin County, Tennessee.

Her parents were Rev. James Hamilton Witherspoon and his first wife
Jane
. Her father was in the mercantile business and was a pastor in Waterloo, AL. Her husband's parents were Phillip and Mary "Polly" Wesson Howell of Waterloo, AL. Phillip was a farmer. They married in Lauderdale County on September 15, 1825. Polly was born in South Carolina and Phillip in Tennessee. They both came to northwest Alabama before marrying.

Sallie's half brother was James Hamilton Gordon (J.G.) Witherspoon of Ada, OK. See his picture to the right. He was a highly respected, prominent businessman and civic leader for many years. He is buried in Rosedale Cemetery in Ada. J.G.'s parents were Rev. James H.Witherspoon and his second wife Mary Medora "Dora" Lucas Witherspoon. Dora is buried in Rosedale Cemetery in Ada. See Sallie's dad's grave marker to the right, Rev. James H. Witherspoon buried in Richardson Cemetery.

Sarah "Sallie" and Benjamin Howell had a daughter
Bennie Howell Chedester who died in 1955 and was buried in Britton, OK in Britton Cemetery. Her husband Frank was buried in the same cemetery but in a different area apparently.

Bennie Howell (female) was raised in Cooke Co., Texas and Hardeman Co., Texas by James G. Witherspoon and wife Harriett C. (Witherspoon) Witherspoon after her parents died in the 1870's. Harriett was a sister to Bennie's mother, Sarah Witherspoon Howell. Bennie is found living with the James G. Witherspoon family in the 1880 & 1900 census. Records in Hardin County, Tennessee state and confirm that both parents of Bennie Howell died and that she was sent to Cooke County, Texas to live with the James G. Witherspoon family. This is not the J.G. Witherspoon of Ada, OK who was Sarah's half brother.

Note: Sallie's last name was spelled Howel on her marker, which is certainly a mistake as her last name appears to have been Howell in other documents about the family.
