John entered the service for the Confederacy at age 16, June 1864, fought in 9th Battalion NC Sharpshooters with older brothers Ephraim and Henry, brother Yerby was in the 21st Regt, and brother George fought for the Union in the 3rd Regt MO Cavalry. Name changed around this time to B. Cassel, from Barnacastle, though Ephraim & George never changed their names. John, Henry, Ephriam, and Yerby were all present at Appomatox when Lee surrendered, paroled at Appomatox, and after war John went west to Nebraska where the land was cheap. He homesteaded in Custer Co, built sod house where all children except Clarence were born.
John married Rosa Schreyer, daughter of Frederick & Anna Schaller Schreyer, among the first homesteaders of Custer Co. She's also buried here. Brother Henry ended up farming in the same county with John, while Ephraim, Yerby and the sisters all stayed in NC. John and Henry met a man who came through NE and knew a man in MO with the same name, turned out to be George, and they renewed contact with him. He had decided to never contact the family due to his fighting for the Union, he thought they wouldn't want to know him anymore. They assured him they still loved him and kept in touch for the rest of their lives.
