William was a veteran of the Korean War and served as a corporal in the Army.

He was born in Flintville, Tenn., a son of John D. and Minnie M. Norris Simmons. He married Helen V. Walters June 19, 1953, in Huntington. His wife survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Ronald K. Simmons of Warsaw and David W. Simmons of Fort Wayne; four daughters, Vickie Ham of Decatur, Robin Simmons of Canton, Ohio, Barbara Fisher of Huntington, and Tammy Fernandes of Hagerstown, Md; a brother, Leon Wayne Simmons of Huntington; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Horace Simmons, Donald Simmons, Guy Simmons, Judane Simmons, Roy Simmons, Crawford Simmons, and Leo Simmons; and six sisters, Lorren Simmons, Elizabeth Boggs, Odell Gray, Reatha Hanline, Carline Bartlett, and Lela Heath.
