He was born in Flintville, Tenn., a son of John D. and Minnie M. Norris Simmons. He married Helen V. Walters June 19, 1953, in Huntington. His wife survives.

Simmons of Fort Wayne; four daughters, Vickie Ham of Decatur, Robin Simmons of Canton, Ohio, Barbara Fisher of Huntington, and Tammy Fernandes of Hagerstown, Md; a brother, Leon Wayne Simmons of Huntington; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Horace Simmons, Donald Simmons, Guy Simmons, Judane Simmons, Roy Simmons, Crawford Simmons, and Leo Simmons; and six sisters, Lorren Simmons, Elizabeth Boggs, Odell Gray, Reatha Hanline, Carline Bartlett, and Lela Heath.
